Hi, I’m Kate.
Hi, I'm Kate.
I'm Kate Marshall, a registered psychologist and the founder of The Long Version.
One of the things I love about psychology is the opportunity to understand people beyond what might be immediately apparent. The way we think, feel and respond to the world is shaped by so much more than any single experience or difficulty.
I value the conversations that help people make sense of themselves, consider different perspectives and discover that things don't necessarily have to stay the way they've always been.
In my work, I bring together genuine curiosity, evidence-based psychological approaches and a collaborative style of therapy. My aim is to help people feel understood, while also supporting them to develop the confidence, skills and understanding to make meaningful changes in their lives.
My approach to psychology
I believe that people make sense in context. Even responses or patterns that cause us difficulties may have developed for understandable reasons.
Taking the time to explore these patterns can offer valuable insight into why we respond the way we do. But understanding is only one part of the process.
Therapy is also about recognising what's within our influence, developing practical skills and building confidence in our capacity to navigate challenges and make choices that reflect what matters to us.
My approach is collaborative and grounded in evidence-based psychological practice. I draw on therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other approaches suited to the person and their circumstances.
I don't believe the role of a psychologist is to have all the answers. Instead, I see therapy as a process of working together, combining psychological knowledge with your own understanding of yourself and your life.
The aim is not simply to feel better in the moment, but to develop greater understanding, flexibility and confidence in how you approach life beyond our sessions.
Professional background
I hold a Master of Psychology (Clinical) from Bond University and am a registered psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.
My experience spans public mental health services, private practice, university-based clinical work and psychological research.
I've worked with people experiencing anxiety, obsessive-compulsive difficulties, depression, grief, significant life changes, workplace stress and relationship difficulties.
Working across different settings has reinforced the importance of approaching each person with curiosity, clinical knowledge and an appreciation for their individual circumstances.
Why The Long Version?
Sometimes the short version is easier to tell. It might be the version we share with others, the explanation we give ourselves or the part of the story that seems most obvious.
But there's often more beneath the surface.
The Long Version grew from a belief that people are more than their symptoms, diagnoses or the difficulties they're experiencing. Understanding someone means making room for the experiences, relationships and circumstances that have shaped them.
It's a reflection of what I value in psychology: looking beyond the obvious, approaching people without judgement and recognising the possibilities that can emerge through greater understanding.
Because there is always more to the story.
Let's start with a conversation.
If you're considering psychological therapy, a complimentary 15-minute introductory call is an opportunity to ask questions, share a little about what you're looking for and see whether working together might be a good fit.

THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME - The Long Version
The Long Version was created from a simple belief: there is always more to the story.
No person can be fully understood through a diagnosis, a difficult period or a brief version of what has happened to them. Our experiences, relationships, values and ways of coping all form part of a much fuller picture.
The Long Version begins with psychology and will gradually grow into conversations, writing and thoughtfully designed resources that help us understand ourselves and one another with greater curiosity, kindness and depth.
